WebSentinel Users Guide

Migrating from WebSTAR Security

This chapter describes how to migrate your security information from WebSTAR to WebSentinel. The process does require some work on your actual WebSTAR server, but should cause you very little pain when making the transition. Just think of the time you will save administering your server once you have WebSentinel up and running!

First, you must export your users and password information from the WebSTAR server itself. Choose "Passwords..." from the Edit menu and a dialog showing your web servers user info will appear, similar to the one below.

Edit Passwords (WebSTAR)

From this dialog, choosing the "Export List" button will allow you to save all of your user data to a text file which WebSentinel can understand. Just save your user data file to the folder suggested by WebSTAR with it's default name.

After the export is complete, close WebSTAR's Passwords window. The next step is to take this exported text file and move it to your personal workstation where WebSentinel Admin is installed. Once you have done that, launch WebSentinel Admin and open up the Realms window by choosing it from the Window menu or pushing the Realms button on the Admin palette.

Now, choose "Import Realms" from the File menu. If the "Import Realms" item is not available, be sure that your Realms window is open and is the currently active window. You will be presented with the standard program linking dialog box.

Connecting to Server

Enter your username and password as specified in the "Users and Groups" Control Panel of the remote machine. This is most likely the same username and password you use when connecting to your server with WebSTAR Admin. If you chose a copy of WebSTAR running locally on your computer you will not be presented with this dialog.

Once you successfully connect to the WebSTAR server, WebSentinel will import all of your defined realms into the Realms window.

Though you may be tempted to edit your existing realm information do not make these changes now. When importing users from WebSTAR, WebSentinel will try to match realm access based on the name used in WebSTAR.

The next step is to import your user information from WebSTAR. To do this, you will need to copy the "password.export" file WebSTAR created earlier. If you haven't already, move that file from WebSTAR's folder to the computer you are using WebSentinel Admin on.

First, open up the Users window in WebSentinel Admin either by double-clicking on the "Users" item in the Admin palette or choosing "Users" from the Window menu. With the Users window now open, choose "Import Users" from the File menu. If the "Import Users" item is not available, be sure that your Users window is open and is the currently active window.

Importing Users

Choose the "password.export" file and WebSentinel will import all of the user and password information into its internal database. WebSentinel will grant access to realms previously imported if the name of the realm has not been changed. After you have completed this operation you have successfully migrated all of your security data from WebSTAR!

Before WebSentinel will receive the proper security events from WebSTAR, you will need to delete the realms you have defined within WebSTAR itself. To do this, WebSTAR Admin is required. Launch WebSTAR Admin and connect to the web server, then choose "Realms" from the Configure menu.

Select each of the defined realms in the listing and choose the "Delete" button to remove the realm from WebSTAR's internal security settings.
